Our Refinishing Process

How do we improve your cabinets?

Remove doors and drawers

First we begin by removing your doors, drawer faces, and hardware from the cabinets. Numbering each piece so we know exactly where each one goes during reassembly. Even if all the drawers look the same, there may be slight differences that can cause issues once you put your freshly painted cabinets back together again. (Doors and drawer faces will be brought back to our shop for completion.)

Wash and prep

Then we thoroughly wash all areas with a good cleaner, degreaser or an emulsifying dish soap to remove residues and grease. After the cabinets are cleaned we mask off all of the cabinet box openings with paper, plastic and tape. We completely cover your counters, floor, ceiling and walls in the immediate area to prevent overspray. If the cabinets are in an area where we have access to a window we will set up an HEPA filter exhaust fan to help circulate fresh air. Finally we set up sheet plastic and tension poles to create a temporary wall separating the cabinets from the rest of your home.

Scuff sand

Our next step is scuff sanding your cabinetry to create a surface profile that will better help the primer adhere. We utilize our Festool HEPA filter mechanical sanding devices to help minimize dust as much as possible. If there are any holes or imperfections we will patch them with a quality wood putty or Bondo filler and then sand it down to create a smooth surface. Then we will wipe the sanding dust off the cabinets with a damp rag and vacuum any dust off of the counters and floor left over from the sanding process.

Prime

Depending on your specific type of cabinet we will select the best type of primer for your project. Oak grain or raw wood cabinets will get primed with a high quality oil based primer to promote good adhesion and seal off any wood tannins from bleeding through. Cabinets which were previously painted, laminate or have a smooth polyurethane finish will get primed with Stix waterborne bonding primer to promote excellent adhesion.

Fine sand

Once the primer has dried, we will sand everything again using a very fine-grit sandpaper to prevent deep scratches from the sandpaper and get rid of any bumps, lint or dust that has appeared on your cabinetry. The surface areas will then get wiped down again to remove any dust from the sanding process.

Apply the finish

Finally we will begin to apply the finish paint to your cabinets. Using our HVLP cup gun we will begin spraying your cabinets with a high end cabinet grade 1K paint making multiple passes with thin coats to avoid runs. Typically it requires 2-3 coats of paint to get proper coverage making horizontal and vertical passes during each coat of paint. The 1K paint we utilize for finishing cabinets is different from traditional trim paint that you would find at a big box store. The product is designed specifically for professional spray application. The paint flows and levels to a smooth finish and can be sanded or recoated in as little as 35-45 minutes. This premium waterborne coating is ideal for use on kitchen cabinets achieving two-component performance with a one-component system. This rapid curing paint promotes superior moisture and chemical resistance as well as excellent blocking resistance. This self-sealing finish meets or exceeds Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) requirements.

Let dry and reconstruct

After 24-48 hours of dry time we can begin assembling your cabinets. After everything is put back together we will install clear cabinet bumpers on the backs of the cabinet doors and drawers to prevent the painted surfaces from rubbing together which can cause premature wear on the finish.
