How Often Should You Repaint the Exterior of Your Home

Typically the paint job of the exterior of your house should last approximately 6-10 years. Of course, the longevity could be dependent on four things: the quality of the paint used, the expertise of the prep and work completed, climate, and the surrounding environment.

Paint on wood siding lasts roughly 3-7 years, but staining should be done every 3-5 years. For a stucco surface on your house, you can certainly expect the paint to last up to 10 years. Painting the aluminum siding on your home can last upwards of 12-15 years.

The trim may begin to show signs of age and fade within the first 3 years due to exposure to the sun. Darker trim colors do fade quicker than lighter shades. Selecting light shades will allow you to get more bang for the buck, lasting a good year or more, longer.

Power washing the exterior of your home may help to increase the lifespan of your paint job and keep it looking nicer.

There may be times when you should paint sooner…

If you are considering selling your home or installing a new landscape design, you may want to consider painting sooner. A fresh new exterior paint job will surely add to the curb appeal of your home, increase its value and get you a buyer quicker.

Coordinate your exterior as you would your interior. You wouldn’t dream of refurnishing and redecorating your home without a beautiful complementary paint job. The same applies to installing new landscaping in your yard. Repainting your house will really enhance the landscaping design project!
